A DOT physical checks that you can safely operate a commercial vehicle. In plain terms, the visit includes:
- Vision and hearing checks — with your glasses, contacts, or hearing aids if you use them
- Blood pressure and pulse
- A urine test that screens for medical conditions such as diabetes or kidney issues — it is not a drug test
- A review of your health history and current medications
- A head-to-toe physical exam — heart, lungs, and general health
Qualification is determined at the examination, in accordance with FMCSA standards (49 CFR 391.41–391.49). No certification outcome is promised before the exam.
What to bring
- Photo ID (driver’s license or CDL)
- A list of your current medications and doses
- Glasses or contacts, if you wear them
- Hearing aids, if you use them
- Specialist documentation for conditions such as diabetes, sleep apnea, or heart conditions
Bringing these the first time is the easiest way to avoid a second trip.
How the visit works
Plan for about 30–45 minutes in the clinic.
Complete the exam
History review, vitals, vision and hearing, urine screen, and the physical exam.
Leave with your certificate
When you qualify at the exam, your medical examiner’s certificate is issued at the visit.
